Rasmus Fleischer skriver om installationen The Library of Unborrowed Books:
Det består av utvalda böcker just från Stockholms stadsbibliotek, vars utvaldhet består just i att de aldrig blivit valda. Konstnären begärde helt enkelt att få låna olånade böcker. Under lånetiden, då de fick lämna källarmagasinets radioaktiva luft, blev de till en tillfällig biblioteksfilial.
Ett liknande bibliotek är “The Interstitial Library” – biblioteket mellan rummen – som har följande inkluderingspolicy:
- Books that fall between categories recognized by other libraries.
- Books that occupy cultural blind spots, because they are deemed to be offensive, trivial, unfashionable, or to contain false information.
- Books that are notable for qualities not catalogued in ordinary libraries, including those ordinarily seen as extrinsic to the text—e.g. intriguing marginalia, provocative typos, a rare butterfly crushed between two pages.
- Books that do not exist in ordinary terms—e.g. fictional books, books that have been lost or destroyed, books that are yet to be written.
Katalogiseringsreglerna är rätt så fria, och präglade av individen som kategoriserar dem, men jag gillar det här rådet för att kategorisera böcker som faller mellen existerande klasser:
For those books that fall between two or more clearly defined genres or subject headings, it is permissible to define a category as a string of terms. For example, we might class Madame Bovary and Dress For Success under the heading of Clothing & Desire. We might class books on taxidermy, poisoning, euthanasia, cremation, Egyptian mummies and autopsies with The Tibetan Book of the Dead under the heading of How-To & Death.
