Kliar det på halsen? Det kan vara WiFi:et på jobbet!

Four libraries in Paris have turned off their wi-fi internet\nconnections after staff claimed they were causing health problems.\n

The latest to shut down its wireless network is the wireless\nSainte-Genevieve university library in the 5th arrondissement after a\nmember of staff threatened to take early retirement on health grounds.\n

The library has had wi-fi installed since the end of 2007. All\ncomputer users will now have to plug their laptops into the\nconventional fixed-line network.\n

In his letter to his employers, the shop worker stated: \"Over the\nlast few months, and increasingly over the last few weeks, I have\nsuffered strong symptoms associated with the wi-fi network.\n

Some of the research suggests a link between cellphone use and three\ntypes of tumors: glioma; cancer of the parotid, a salivary gland near\nthe ear; and acoustic neuroma,\na tumor that essentially occurs where the ear meets the brain. All\nthese cancers are rare, so even if cellphone use does increase risk,\nthe risk is still very low.

Last year, The American Journal of\nEpidemiology published data from Israel finding a 58 percent higher\nrisk of parotid gland tumors among heavy cellphone users. Also last\nyear, a Swedish analysis of 16 studies in the journal Occupational and\nEnvironmental Medicine showed a doubling of risk for acoustic neuroma\nand glioma after 10 years of heavy cellphone use.

\"What we're\nseeing is suggestions in epidemiological studies that have looked at\npeople using phones for 10 or more years,\" says Louis Slesin, editor of\nMicrowave News, an industry publication that tracks the research.\n\"There are some very disconcerting findings that suggest a problem,\nalthough it's much too early to reach a conclusive view.\"
